The Effect
Using what’s known as the “Paddle Move,” the HotRod is shown to have six multi-colored dots per side and magically the dots all become red!Paddle Move
This is a deceptive technique used to show two sides of the HotRod to be the same. One side is actually being shown twice. Hold the HotRod with the multi-colored dots facing up between your thumb and index finger. Lift the HotRod up as if you are going to expose the same colored side. As you do this, you need to twist/roll the HotRod between your thumb and index finger 180 degrees to the opposite side. The HotRod falls to the opposite side, showing the multi-colored dots again. This is a two part move: turning the HotRod over while at the same time rolling the HotRod 180 degrees. The larger motion of turning hides the smaller motion of twisting/rolling. Do this same move in reverse to return the HotRod to the original position (Paddle Move in Reverse). Use a mirror to practice your angles.
Performance
Start by showing the pen’s multi-colored dots by using the Paddle Move to make your spectator think both sides have multicolored dots. Then ask your spectator to name any number between one and six. The goal is for your spectator to think he or she selected the red color. Demonstrated below is how to force the color red.If one is selected, say out loud O, N, E, and then count down black (O), yellow (N), RED (E).
If two is selected, say out loud T, W, O, and then count down black (T), yellow (W), RED (O).
If three is selected, say out loud 1, 2, 3, and then count down black (1), yellow (2), RED (3).
If four is selected, say out loud 1, 2, 3, 4 and then count up purple (1), green (2), blue (3), RED (4).
If five is selected, say out loud F,I,V,E and then count up purple (F), green (I), blue (V), RED (E).
If six is selected, say out loud S, I, X, and then count down black (S), yellow (I), RED (X).
Now that you have secretly forced your spectator to select RED, it is time for the instant color change move! Show both sides again to have multicolored dots using the paddle move. Then snap the pen in a downward motion at the same time roll it over 180 degrees. Reveal that the pen's dots have all become red! Show both sides to have red dots using the paddle move. Your audience will be astonished!
